Vitamin B9, also called folate or folic acid, is one of water-soluble B vitamin. The primary biochemical function of folic acid is to transfer a single carbon in the synthesis of a number of metabolites in the body. It aids in the synthesis of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material, and is especially important when and where there is division of cells and growth of tissues such as in infancy, puberty, pregnancy and in the bone marrow. Folic acid along with vitamin B12 is required for the production of RBC (red blood cells) and WBC (white blood cells).
